Head: Somewhat mesaticephalic skull-type, medium in size, wedge-shaped, and in proportion to the rest of the body. The skull is medium in length and width with a slight arch. The head muscles are smooth and not overly pronounced or exaggerated. The head is clean and without excess skin or wrinkles.
Eyes: The eyes are moderate in size, set well apart, and may be full, round, almond, or oval. They may range in color from hazel-green to dark brown, and the color is according to coat color. The eye rims are tightly fitted and well-pigmented. Bulging eyes, obliquely set eyes, or blue eyes are incorrect for the breed. There should be sufficient bone in the surrounding orbital sockets to protect the eyes.
Ears: The ears are medium in size, slightly high, and set fairly close to the skull. They are V-shaped and wide at the base, with pointed tips, held firmly erect. Ears should never appear narrow and long or broken.
Muzzle: The muzzle is full, deep, and broad. The plane, or bridge of the cannon, is straight. Upper and lower jaws are well developed, nearly equal in length, and of good bone substance, never appearing snippy or weak.
Nose: The nose is well-pigmented, black, or self-colored depending on the coat. Nostrils open well.
Neck: Strongly muscular with moderate length and a slight arch to allow a dignified head carriage. The neck is deep and wide and tapers evenly to the head from the body. The neck is clean-cut and without excess skin, sore throat, or dip.
Chest: Deep and broad but never wider than deep. The brisket extends to the point of the elbow.
Body: lithe, elegant, compact, and of good substance. The body is never racy or pure. The width at the forequarters is about the same as the width at the hindquarters.
Feet: oval to rounded, compact, with well-arched toes and hard pads.
Tail: Set high on the croup. It is thick at the base and tapering toward the tip. The tail is carried by the dog’s mood and energy level but never tucked. It is held erect when moving or excited and downward in a neutral position when relaxed. The tail may be left natural (preferred) or docked short to the third or fourth joint. Natural tails are moderately long, with the tip of the last vertebrae extending to the hock joints when held down. The tail may be straight or gently curved.
Movement: The Toy Fox Terrier’s movement is lively, active, energetic, animated, effortless, efficient, and flowing. It should be free from any hackney action. The characteristics of a healthy structure are evident. When moving away, the forelegs and rear pasterns should remain parallel to one another. When viewing movement from the front, the forelegs should remain parallel, with elbows and paws moving neither in nor out. From the rear, the back pads should be visible when the rear legs are extended. As speed increases, the forelimbs and hindlimbs will converge to the centerline of gravity. From the side, the topline should remain firm and level.
Temperament: The Toy Fox Terrier breed is an engaging, lively, energetic, and spunky character. They are loyal to their people and owners. Their intelligence allows them to learn and excel in many disciplines and sports (such as obedience). They are athletic and capable bodies, along with their can-do attitude, which makes them excellent agility prospects.
Toy Fox Terrier Dog History
Terrier breeds have been documented in England since the 1500s. One of those species was developed to drive foxes from their dens during hunting. The Smooth Fox Terrier has always varied widely in size, with some dogs weighing around 20 pounds while others were as small as 7 pounds. These runs were often more valuable than the larger dogs because they seemed more clumsy and more willing to jump into the fray, whether it was ratting, hunting other game, or defending the home.
The United Kennel Club began registering Smooth Fox Terriers in 1912. Smaller dogs were registered alongside larger dogs as Smooth Fox Terriers. In the mid-1920s, small dog fans petitioned the UKC to make small dogs a separate breed, which was finally accomplished in 1936.
