My baby, Bitty, was constipated. She usually poops every day, and she hadn’t had a good poop in 2 days. She only had a couple very small (quarter-size) loops in 2 days and seemed to be in discomfort. I’ve had this product since the summer, when she seemed to be hacking up more hairballs. This was actually the first time she had been constipated. She’s 5 years and 2 months old, and her undercoat recently came in over the summer (bad timing, I know!) and we recently got a cat that she also cleans.

Anyway, I tried feeding it to her on a spoon, thinking it would be like a treat; no go. I tried mixing it with her wet food that she gets in the morning, but no go. So I asked my coworker who recommended it; she said to mix it with Gerber baby food. I tried all the flavors I thought she would like; no go. So then I followed the instructions on the label, which basically said if you can’t mix it, put it on their nose or paws.

It’s extremely sticky, so I felt really bad doing this, and I’m sure if you love your animal, I’m sure you’re still reading this; I have no doubt about it. Anyway, I put it on her paws and of course, being the clean freak she is, she licked it off (it took a while; when I say sticky, I mean sticky.) The next morning I was expecting a big cavity in the litter box.

And there wasn’t one. So I doubled the dosage the next day at the same time. She was still coming out like 3-4 quarter-sized conchs, so on the third day, I tripled the dosage. And please don’t do what I did! That’s not in the directions at all.

I’m a nurse, so of course, I think I’m above the directions, which I’m not, and I know I should know better, but of course I started googling constipation in cats, Megacolon, and all this stuff. So I figured diarrhea was better than death. As a nurse, I’m programmed to think about the worst-case scenario all the time. Anyway, on the fourth day she started having diarrhea, and it lasted about 3-4 days. The first couple conchs that came out were hard and solid from where she was constipated, but after that, my poor baby stayed in the litter box for the next few days.

I say this to say—the product works 100%. Don’t be like me and try to rush the results. Especially if you have a big cat. Luckily, my baby is only 5 years old, but if he were older, I would have dehydrated him! Either way, the product is amazing and works; the only downside is that your cat may not like the taste or texture, but if he or she needs it, I’m sure you can find a way to get it down.

Now that Bitty is better, I’ve started feeding him the Hairball Control dry food, and I put a probiotic supplement in his wet food in the morning to keep him regular. It’s been about a month since he’s been constipated, and we haven’t had any problems.
